Many years ago, my father became a Freemason in Queenstown, Tasmania (Mt. Lyell Lodge No. 24 TC).
Even in the brief encounters I had with his Brethren, I found them to be some of the most giving and selfless people I have ever known. A few years ago, my father was to be installed as Worshipful Master of the Lodge. Around that time, he suffered a stroke and was left with lasting challenges to his vision, memory, and mobility. Despite these obstacles, his Brethren again chose him to lead as Worshipful Master. To me, this was an incredible demonstration of the values of trust, respect, and brotherhood that Freemasonry upholds. In that moment, I knew this was something I wanted—and needed—to be a part of.
For me, joining was both a dream fulfilled and a duty embraced. With a lifelong love of history and tradition, I found in Freemasonry not only an ancient and honourable society but also a living community built on charity, integrity, and brotherhood. In a world where fellowship can feel rare, Freemasonry has given me the privilege of contributing to something greater than myself.
My journey Into freemasonry began at a young age though attending the little Yarra Stiener School.
Then like so many others I found a black briefcase with a strange apron while cleaning a deceased relatives home.
As everything happens for a reason I met a Freemason whilst volunteering at Sovereign Hill, I am very happy and extremely grateful that I joined Freemasonry at the time I did
I joined Freemasonry many moons ago to better myself.
I have a rich family history with Freemasonry and all family members spoke highly of the craft.
I would hear regularly them saying making good men better.
Why I became a Freemason
My journey into Freemasonry began with curiosity—drawn by glimpses of its rich influence woven throughout history and literature.
When I finally reached out to Freemasons Victoria, I discovered something far more profound than I had expected: a world grounded in timeless moral principles rather than mystique.
I joined with a simple conviction: any organisation that has endured and flourished across centuries and continents must be a genuine force for good. Ten months into my Masonic journey, that belief has only grown stronger through the genuine brotherhood I’ve found among my fellow members at Guiding Star Lodge.
What began as intellectual fascination has become something much deeper—a commitment to personal growth and service that connects me to both ancient wisdom and a living community of men dedicated to making themselves, and the world around them, better.
At first I was curious about my grandparent’s involvement within an organisation known as “Freemasonry”. In a determined effort to understand more about them and this notoriously mysterious group, I did what any person my age would do, consult the internet.
My exploration lead me to the contact information of a member who I hoped able to assist with guiding me to some records. What I couldn’t have realised at the time was the form and extent that his guidance offered me instead. While assisting him in this modern way and finding his contact, which he assured was intended to be on a private web page.
He on the other hand directed me to a genuine, selfless and contemplative community worldwide of whom I’ve found irreplaceable comradery with. Whose approach to self development is timeless and limitless.
In a modern, digital world where grifters are plentiful, deceit is ordinary and young men find themselves lost. I could not appreciate both the original compulsion to seek position within this association, or the anchoring it has offered in my life more!
I joined our incredible fraternity at an early point in my life, I was looking for a community of individuals who shared my same values as well as offer myself guidance through life. At the first point of joining (before being an official member) I was already in awe at how much we valued our traditions, as well as the camaraderie among the Brethren. It is such a unique experience and I am glad I decided to join!
